Carnival “Ratevski Bamburci

Ratevsky bamburci – a manifestation in the village of Ratevo, Maleshevia, held on January 20 (St. John the Baptist), when the inhabitants masquerade and parade through the village with masks made of animal skins. The Bambur is a symbol of the village, which is believed to have been one of the first inhabitants of the village of Ratevo.

Ratevski Bamburci Carnival another carnival event among traditional winter carnivals consisting of pagan rituals aiming for a happier and more prosperous new year. It is organized in the village of Ratevo near Berovo. Groups of men are masked in animal skins and using bells and other props the groups perform ritual dances to scare away evil spirits.

In the past few years, modern masks have also been incorporated, and carnival groups from neighboring countries have been invited to take part in the festivities.
